Cannabis for Heart Disease

Heart disease is a broad term, and usually refers to “cardiovascular diseases” (CVDs). CVDs are the leading causes of death globally, resulting in 17.9 million deaths (32.1%) in 2015 – up from 12.3 million (25.8%) in 1990. Cannabinoids could be very useful for the treatment of hypertension and inflammation associated with heart disease. However, there are some studies showing an increase in heart attack rates in younger people under 45 who smoke cannabis.

Cannabinoids and terpenes may be used to cut stress and be useful for conditions related to metabolic syndrome, and thereby decrease the risk of CVDs developing in the first instance. In general, the relationship between cannabis and heart health is complicated. Many of the negatives may be mitigated by choosing ingestion methods other than smoking cannabis, and keeping a healthy diet, exercising and sleeping properly. Again, these are all things medical cannabis may help with.
